About Amish Chicken
Creamy Amish Chicken is a delicious oven-baked dish served on Amish bus tours. The chicken is so tender it just melts in your mouth, and the gravy is super flavorful and savory. It is traditionally made using chicken raised in the Amish style. This means the chickens can roam freely and are not confined to small cages, which the Amish believe allows them to lead a more natural and healthy life. One of the benefits of Amish-style chicken is that it is said to be more flavorful than regular chicken. This is because the chickens can eat a wider variety of natural feed and get plenty of exercise. Apart from the quality of the chicken, this dish also tastes great. So, if you don’t have access to Amish-style raised chicken, you must still make it using the chicken that is easily available to you. Amish chicken is great to make on busy days as it comes together in under 40 minutes (most of the time is passive time) using simple ingredients. It is also great for a quick weeknight meal for the whole family or to serve a crowd.
Serving Suggestions
This dish is the ultimate comfort food and goes great with various sides. My favorite side dishes include Instant Pot Garlic Mashed Potatoes, roasted vegetables, steamed broccoli, green beans, and biscuits. You can also use skinless, boneless chicken breasts that are a little drier in texture. This recipe can also be made using a whole chicken cut into small pieces. Flours – All-purpose flour and cornmeal are used to make the base of the sauce. Herbs & Spices – You will need garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper powder, dried oregano, and fresh parsley. Heavy Cooking Cream – Unsweetened heavy cream makes the sauce rich and creamy. You will also need some water. For added flavor, water can be replaced with chicken broth (chicken stock). Rinse 8 boneless skinless chicken thighs and drain well. Whisk together ½ cup of water (or chicken broth) and 1 and ½ cups of unsweetened heavy cream in a mixing bowl and set it aside. Tip – You can add spices like salt, pepper, paprika, etc to this mixture to make a more flavorful sauce. In a shallow bowl, combine the following ingredients.
1 cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup cornmeal 2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder 2 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper 1 teaspoon dried oregano.
Pour the cream and water mixture over and around the chicken into the dish. If you have a meat thermometer, you can check the internal temperature of the chicken; it should be 170°F. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot. You can replace chicken thighs with leftover rotisserie chicken or shredded chicken. To make the dish even more wholesome, add veggies like broccoli, green beans, carrots, baby corn, cauliflower, asparagus, etc., along with the chicken. To mop the creamy sauce, you can also serve some bread or dinner rolls on the side. This chicken recipe also tastes great with egg noodles and steamed rice.
Storage Suggestions
You can make this casserole dish and store it in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze it for up to 3 months. When ready to serve, reheat it on the stove over low heat until warm. You can also reheat it in the microwave. Just be sure not to overcook the chicken, as it will become dry.
