on Feb 10, 2021, Updated Aug 09, 2023 Here are some more hummus recipes: Roasted Sweet Potato Hummus, Savory Pumpkin Hummus, Black Bean Hummus, and Olive Tapenade Hummus. There was a Trader Joe’s right next to our service apartment in LA. There was a Barnes and Noble next to it, too. When Mohit left for the office, Bhavye and I would walk to the book store, read the books, and occasionally buy a few. We would then go to Trader Joe’s and explore their products. I came across this Edamame hummus on one of my trips. I had never heard of Edamame before, let alone the hummus made using it. So, I picked up a box and gave it a try. It was quite delicious, I must say. By then, I had mastered my classic hummus recipe. So, I used it as a base, replaced garbanzo beans with frozen edamame kernels, and made my own edamame hummus. I was quite pleased with the result, and the recipe went straight into my recipe notebook.

About Edamame Hummus

Edamame Hummus is a rich and high-protein appetizer dip made using edamame beans (green soya beans). This dip is popularly sold at Trader Joe’s, but making your own at home is much more economical. It also tastes much better than the store-bought tub. This vegan and gluten-free dip comes together in under 5 minutes. It has a rich and creamy texture and a lemony, earthy flavor. If you like the classic hummus recipe, this green hummus will also be a hit. This green soya bean dip is great for veggies, crackers, or pita bread parties. It also makes for a great sandwich spread.

Variations

No Tahini – You can skip adding tahini and add peanut butter instead. Or you can make it without tahini and not substitute it with anything. Thaw the frozen ones by running them under cold water in a colander before adding them to the other ingredients to make this creamy hummus. If using fresh beans, cook them in water until tender. Drain, cool, and use. Large grocery stores sell frozen edamame beans in the freezer section, and fresh ones are available in the produce section. Garlic adds a lovely flavor to this dip. If you like a prominent garlicky flavor, increase the quantity of garlic. Extra Virgin Olive Oil – Always go for a good quality extra virgin olive oil. You can also replace EVOO with sesame oil. Tahini – You can make tahini at home or use store-bought. If you are short on time, you can add toasted sesame seeds directly while blending. Check out my homemade Tahini Paste recipe here. You can replace the tahini with almond butter or peanut butter for a taste change. Cilantro – Cilantro adds a nice refreshing flavor and color to this healthy dip. Lime Juice – Freshly squeezed lime juice (or lemon juice) adds a refreshing taste and a slight tanginess to the hummus. If using shelled frozen beans that are mostly pre-cooked, rinse with water, drain, and use. If you are using frozen whole beans, shell them, run them under cold water, and use them. Peel the garlic cloves, juice the lime, and gather the remaining ingredients.

1 cup shelled edamame bean kernels 1 whole garlic clove (peeled) 2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil ¼ cup tahini 2 tablespoon cilantro 2 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice ½ teaspoon salt

Process for about 1 and ½ minutes, pausing to scrape down the sides and base of the bowl as necessary until the mixture is well blended. If your hummus is too thick or chunky, run the food processor while drizzling in 1 to 2 tablespoons of chilled water, as necessary, until it reaches your desired consistency. Taste and blend in additional salt if needed. Scrape the hummus into a small serving bowl. Lightly drizzle extra virgin olive oil over the top and garnish with toasted sesame seeds and some edamame kernels. Serve at room temperature or chilled. No Oil – Skip adding extra virgin oil. Add water instead. Wasabi Powder – You can add a little wasabi powder to your edamame hummus, giving it a subtle pungent flavor. You can add roasted red peppers, cooked beets, avocado, etc, to this recipe.
