About Gyoza Dipping Sauce
Gyoza Dipping Sauce is a quick and easy sauce served with Asian gyoza, potstickers, or dumplings. It is savory, tangy, and slightly sweet with a hint of spice. This homemade vegan gyoza sauce takes 1 minute to prepare and does not require cooking. The homemade dipping sauce is much better, fresher, and more economical than the store-bought ones. The traditional gyoza sauce is prepared with vinegar and soy sauce, but my recipe has a few more simple ingredients that make it flavorful and delicious. This quick gyoza sauce recipe is for a single serving. You can scale the recipe and make individual dipping bowls so everyone can enjoy their own.
Serving Suggestions
Serve Gyoza Sauce with Japanese gyoza (Japanese dumplings), wontons, potstickers, spring rolls, egg rolls, crab rangoon, or your favorite homemade dumplings. Try to use Japanese soy sauce (Shoyu) instead of regular soy sauce for a very authentic flavor. Japanese soy sauce is made by fermenting soybeans and wheat with salt and water for several months to several years, producing a rich, savory liquid with a complex, umami flavor. Kikkoman is my favorite brand. You can replace soy sauce with tamari for a gluten-free option. If rice vinegar is not available, use lemon juice, lime juice, regular white vinegar, white wine vinegar, or apple cider vinegar. You can also use black vinegar, Japanese rice vinegar, or Chinkiang vinegar to change your taste. Sesame oil gives this sauce a very Asian flavor. Try not to replace it with any other oil. Adjust the chili flakes and sugar to suit your taste. The store-bought sauce has some xanthan gum added to it, making it very stable and preventing it from separating. It is a natural ingredient and has no side effects. You can also add ⅛ teaspoon of xanthan gum to your homemade gyoza sauce recipe to prevent it from splitting.
1 tablespoon dark soy sauce 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar 1 teaspoon sesame oil ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes ¼ teaspoon brown sugar ½ teaspoon minced garlic ½ teaspoon grated ginger
Do a taste test and adjust to suit the sauce according to your taste. This sauce can also be used to top stir-fried rice, noodles, omelets, or savory crepes. Add this dumpling sauce to your stir-fried vegetables or blanched greens. It is also great as a salad dressing.
Storage Suggestions
Do not store the sauce that you have already used for dipping. Unused sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Mix it well before serving.
