Japanese Chicken Curry | Japanese Curry Recipe | How to Make Kare Rice | Japanese Kare Traditionally japanese curry is made using a readymade curry block which is available in super market which is an easy method. All these days I thought making japanese curry is time consuming and unusual. But when I did my research on that, I found out making japanese curry is so easy that you might thing. it is very similar to indian curries. Also it suits our indian palate.

About Japanese Curry 

According to wikipedia. Curry originates in Indian cuisine and was brought to Japan from India by the British. The Imperial Japanese Navy adopted curry to prevent beriberi, and now the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Friday menu is curry. The dish became popular and available for purchase at supermarkets and restaurants in the late 1960s. Japanese curry has little resemblance to curried dishes from other regions. It was changed and adapted so much that it stands on its own as uniquely Japanese. It is so widely consumed that it can be called a national dish.

How to Make Japanese Curry at Home from Scratch

Cooking Chicken & Veggies

Heat 1 tsp sesame oil in a pan, add in potatoes and carrots and saute for 4 to 5 mins. Once brown remove it to a bowl. Set aside.Heat more oil and add the chicken and cook till brown. It will take around 2 to 3 mins. Remove it add to the potatoes. Set aside.

Making Curry Base

Now in the same pot, add in butter. Add in onions and saute for 2 mins. Add in ginger and garlic and saute for a min. In goes curry powder, chilli powder and garam masala powder and mix well. Cook this for 30 seconds. flour is added and stir fry for atleast 2 to 3 mins till the raw flour taste is vanished. Now add in chicken stock and scrape the bottom the pan to deglaze the pan. Now add in soy sauce, sugar, salt, tomato ketchup and mix well.

Cooking Curry

Add chicken and vegetables back in and mix well. Cover and cook on low heat till chicken and potatoes are cooked. Remove and serve over rice. Japanese Chicken Curry Recipe Step by Step pictures

1)Start by making the rice. Wash and take it in a pot. I used sushi rice. Cover with water Pin 2)Cover with a lid and cook on low heat till rice is fully cooked. Pin 3)Take all your ingredients for japanese curry. Pin 4)I like to season my chicken with salt and pepper Pin 5)Add a touch of flour. Specially if you are using chicken breast, adding flour will make a seal around the outer portion of chicken and the chicken wont get dry. Pin 6)Mix well. Pin 7)Heat oil in a pot. I used sesame oil. Pin 8)Add in carrots and potatoes. Brown the potatoes for 3 to 5 mins. Pin 9)Vegetables are browned Pin 10)Remove it to a bowl. Pin 10)Add chicken in. Serving Suggestions

Serve japanese chicken curry with hot rice. You can serve with any bread as well. The curry taste delicious with sticky rice, jasmine rice or any asian rice varieties.

Storage & Meal prep

You can store the chicken curry in an air tight container in fridge for upto 3 days. Reheat before serving.
