Compote or compote is a mediaeval European dessert made of whole or chopped fruit in sugar syrup. Whole fruits are cooked with sugar and spices in water. Vanilla, lemon or orange peel, cinnamon sticks or powder, cloves, other spices, ground almonds, grated coconut, candied fruit, or raisins can all be added to the syrup. Thecompote can be served warm or cold. Strawberry compote is a simple recipe made from fresh strawberries that have been cooked down and sweetened with sugar. To add another layer of flavour, add lemon juice, lemon zest, or orange juice. Eastern European cultures frequently use dried fruit for compote, and its syrup is also consumed as a beverage. Both are known as kompot. Pluma moos is the Plautdietch name for dried-fruit compote in Mennonite culture.
