About Sumac Tea
Sumac Tea is a refreshing beverage made from sumac powder, water, and a sweetener. It is not a tea but a tisane (herbal tea), with no tea leaves added. This tart and citrusy drink is my favorite for sipping on hot summer days when the sun is soaring and the body needs constant hydration. You can also serve this soothing tea hot on cold winter days along with your breakfast or for evening tea. This easy-to-make tea is high in vitamin C and has immunity-boosting antioxidants. My vegan and gluten-free sumac tea recipe uses sumac powder, which is easily available, but you can also make it using staghorn sumac berries. I have mentioned the process below. Sumac can be purchased in the whole form or as a ground powder. When buying sumac, make sure it doesn’t contain salt or other additives. It should be plain sumac powder. Sumac has many health benefits. Read about them here. You can use any sweetener, like honey (not vegan), sugar, maple syrup, or agave nectar to sweeten the tea. Sugar-free substitutes like stevia or monk fruit also work fine. Add brewed black or green tea to the recipe to make a variation. Add 1 liter of water and stir well. Refrigerate for 12-16 hours. Add a few ice cubes to tall serving glasses and pour the tea over the ice. Add the sweetener of your choice and stir well. Garnish with a mint sprig and serve immediately. This tea can be stored in the fridge for 2-3 days in a covered glass container.
